There is a Blogging rule that says, ‘If thou has nothing to say, then thou shall Blogeth about Blogs’
That shouldn’t be taken as a confession that I have nothing to say, in fact I always do, it’s just that I might not have stuff to say that might be of any interest to people!
With that disclaimer out of the way let me go on. Sometime back in my rather misplaced sense of humour, I put my mail id so that people who had lots to tell me, which had very little/no connection to what I was saying in my post could mail me at that. I could in turn write back to them lovingly, which could potentially lead to beginning of a beautiful friendship!
Now, I don’t get too many mails on that, which is a good thing given the kinds that I get! But of the ones that I do, with the exception of two people, the rest are totally weird. (Of course if someone’s mail id has hrithikinsideme and swashbucklingstud007, then you can begin to approximate the horror of what the contents will be like!)
Now, some of them are your regular kind of Internet Weirdo’s – you know the ones whose opening lines would be ‘What’s your size?’ ‘Do you masticate?’ (Errrrm) etc. Those I have learnt to brush aside most easily, I mean, there are many factors here – too much time, limited intellect, grammar challenged, not getting any, etc. Surely, one must not grudge people for all of that?
There are others who have suggestions about my Blog, like for instance, ‘Why does your Blog look so ugly?’ Now, what do I say to that?
a) That it reflects my true self… I am ugly and hence my Blog is?
b) That I am sort of technology challenged?
c) That I am a little blind and hence aesthetically challenged?
d) That I thrive on ugliness?
e) That my current Blog is actually a teaser campaign for a Before-After metamorphosis?
f) That I like to offend people with substance?
Of course, that was a rhetoric question by the person who is asking it. But what fun are questions that one can’t answer na? Besides as a digression, aren’t rhetoric questions some kind of an embedded command combined with Mentionities – that is you try to get attention of other person to a detail that he/ she might have missed and will him/her to respond in a manner that you think he/ she ought to. All these mind games, I tell ya! :)
But, ya thanks for the feedback on increasing the prettiness quotient of my Blog. (I have even been recommend, consultants I ought to rope in for the same!). When intent and desire will conspire I will do that, at the moment both are lacking! :) And while they do say, “Beauty lies in yes of the beholder…” (A theory which I don’t quite subscribe to!), your point is well taken, thanks!
Now aesthetics is okay, acceptable even, but another one that I get saddled with is this, ‘Why is your Blog so (un) interactive?
Ah, what do I say to that?
I think some soul searching will do me good, okay not the soul may be... but some pop-psychology won't do any harm!
So, we have these various types of Blogs, or so I think.
For instance, I think there are some Blogs, which are what I call Hyper-Blogs (same analogy as Hyper-Mart, you know the huge type discount stores a la Walmart);
Some are like MacBlogs (Aka McDonalds – that is no matter where you go it’s the same experience)
And some are your Feel Good Blog (Shop Around the Corner and all that feel good humbug, quaint and stuff)
Finally we have the Govt Babu Blogs (Like the CSD canteens, Govt Airlines, Nationalized Banks and Ration stores type of places. While the products might be good, but the shopping experience is hardly hot, complete with bored and uninterested sales personnel. And only the ones with the ‘right connections’ gets noticed.)
Of course, in case you are missing it, the Commenter is the Shopper/ Consumer. So depending on the store you go to, your loyalty levels and consumption patterns will vary hugely!
So, if you go to…
Hyper Blogs: You might like what you see, but the host/hostess will be missing. Yet, the world and the uncles can be spotted there. You sort of get your gratification and move out. You may or may not be loyal to the site… But you know, it’s a good bet, and at any point when you have nothing else to do, you go back there… They will do no self-marketing, they will just be there on every page, linked to everyone’s Blogs! They will do frequent postings!
Mac Blogs: Here you might get some reassurance that you are not alone, but that apart the standout value and memorability will be low. You might leave a comment if the Macness being communicated is in sync with your Macness. Of course, all the Mac people usually hang out together. These Blogs will do some Direct Marketing kind of selling, no mass media approach. Go leave comments on Blogs of other Bloggers who are obviously potential commenters!
Feel Good Blogs: Here the host/hostess of the Blog will make you feel all welcomed and Coo sufficiently. And depending on your preferences you may either be put off by the cloying sweetness or might enjoy the, “I loved your Blog and its so good that you commented on my Blog thing…” These Blogs enjoy high Commenter loyalty and very often the posts and comments might have no relation to each other. Also there will be so many parallel conversations that will take place in the comments-space that if you join in mid-way and are not endowed with multi-dimensional thinking, it might be a problem. I think these are the elusive “Interactive” Blogs! These people will be nice to everyone, reply to every comment, go leave comments on other people’s pages and will also leave, ‘Welcome to Blogging’ in newbies pages… and they will post most infrequently, I suppose till they get tired of their 3,45,568 comments! :)
Govt Babu Blogs: These Blogs, are the kind which a few people 'still' remain loyal to. Mostly people hate and whine about them, like we do with the Government. The host/hostess of these Blogs are nicer to people with connections and part of their inner Circle! :) They will almost never voluntarily comments on other Blogs unless once again its an Inner Circle thing. They may not reply/ or reply very late to comments that other readers leave on their Blog!
Naturally, I am a cross between a Govt Babu Blog and a Mac Blog and it would seem… Though, I must admit I didn’t sort of think of it as way before I began Blogging. I normally don’t think much about most things anyway! :)
So, that my dear friends explains the lack of (un) inter-activeness of my page!
However, not exactly related, I have promised a friend, who reads my Blog, that I shall not do any posts on people who leave me nasty comments on my Blog, I am trying not to. So, I shall stop myself from ranting about the said person. So, much Inner Poise I tell you! :)
While on Blogs, my mom has become a frequent reader of my Blog, this after our neighborhood newspaper had an article on, ’45 year old housewife runs away with Internet friend’
So, I think she figures, that the next edition might have a story on ‘Chennai Blogger Elopes’ or some such. So, she read my posts with a fine-tooth comb and made some incisive observations that I shall spare you the details about, and me the embarrassment! :)
But, she looked at the commenters and asked me the following questions:
a) Is that a man/woman?
a.1) If answered woman… What’s her real name? STOP INTERROGATION
a.2) If man… go to (b)
b) Do you know him from before?
b.1) If YES, Stop Interrogation
b.2) If NO, go to (c)
c) Where does he live? What does he do? Etc.?
d) Does he know your real name?
e) Show me his Blog?
f) Is he a Tam-Brahm?
Really, my mom sometimes will outdo herself. Like she told me post the analysis of my Blog Links: You have 3 Mallus, 2 Bongs, 3 Tams, 2 Gults, 1 UPite and rest DKCS (Don’t know, cant say) on your list! So, she has reached the most awesome conclusion that Kerala is the most evolved Blogging state in the country. I quote, ‘Such a small state and so many of them!’
So, that’s what we have…
Now given that I am in the business of gauging peoples opinions, I have decided that if I don’t take suggestions seriously, how can I expect my clients to?
So, I have decided to make my Blogspace most interactive. Now, like in modern day marketing, there are two ways to get consumers to buy:
1) Give ek-ka-saath-ek-free offer or 10% extra or Gold coin inside Blog etc.
2) Create buzz and hype, where there is none!
Now, I am not too sure about giving away stuff for free, so I think I will run a contest instead! It will be fun! :)
So, pay attention, for I shall not repeat this:
1) Link the title of the post to the contents of the Blog in some manner.
2) Count the number of paragraphs that begin with “Now”in this post.
3) Compose a Haiku which has your Id embedded into it.
4) Quote the opening lines of, ‘Gone with the Wind’
5) Quote the original source of, ‘It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife’
6) FOR THE MEN: If in like in the movie, “The truth about Cats and Dogs”, you were presented an opportunity to choose between Janeane Garafalo and Uma Thurman then who would you choose and why? NOTE: Honesty will be appreciated over political correctedness. FOR THE WOMEN: Would you contemplate doing what Janeane Garafalo character does in the movie?
7) From this dialogue in the movie, “When Harry met Sally” “I love that you get cold when it's 71 degrees out. I love that it takes you an hour and a half to order a sandwich. I love that you get a little crinkle above your nose when you're looking at me like I'm nuts. I love that after I spend the day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes. And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night. And it's not because I'm lonely, and it's not because it's New Year's Eve. I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.” Which is the part you liked the most? Thought was the clincher?
Okay, that looks tough, doesn’t it? Will I scare away existing readers I wonder? However, you may attempt any 4 of them, thats okay right?
However, must warn you that I have given differential rating to each of these questions and will score you accordingly.
Oh, I am sure everyone wants to know the prize; I promise there is one all right!
I shall shortlist 3 people for the final round! :)
And might I also add, depending on how it goes, I might choose to rig the contest.
Should there be no response, I will get in touch with the Consultant to make my Blog pretty and conclude that, “Beauty does indeed, lie in the eyes of the beholder”
UPDATE: Attempting Q(1) and Q(3) will fetch you 10 Bonus Points! :)

came here to see two unread passages of yours. Though it true there was{i think you are changing your image since last post..} a non-respose kinda feeling in your blog, it is as true as it is that it was your anonimity that sustained many of your readers including me.
But since am commenting let me say, your analysis about the bloggers{naming them with something we can relate and imagine to} was good. Gives an oppurtunity to check where do i stand.
One more thing i wanted to say from lots i had is that the mystic smile u and ur friend{mayb real or ur charactors} can drive the reader's imagination to anywhere...Well written...
One more thing...Am still muddled with the title...'The long and winding road...'Thought for a BIG while, but couldnt catch up the essence of the title....
Hope to clear it soon...meanwhile let me dwell on it;....
This whole interactivity business is hogwash, I know that! Like you even care?! :) How about putting up photooo of prize? Or is it of the type which cant be photographed?
And while I don’t believe this, I shall still humour you. I love all these contests at any rate.
1) Lets see now, ‘Long and Winding Road’ aka Beatles aka Bugs aka Smug Bug
2) Five
3) Room with view
Feeling Claustrophobic in the Closet
Opened the door
7)And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night… ya that one it is! :)
1)The Long and Winding Road...
2) Five
3) Convertible
Pegasus Free and Wild
Zooms Mustang
5) Balle balle Amritsar to LA (oops I meant Pride and Prejudice)
7) when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.
Can you pass me cheat-sheets for rest?
And ya 'Shop Around the Corner' was a real nice touch!
i loved that rule!! "when u have nothing to blog about...." - that one. cool. :D
4. Scarlett O'Hara was not beautiful, but men rarely realized it when caught by her charm just like the Tarleton twins.
7."And it's not because I'm lonely, and it's not because it's New Year's Eve. I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”
ok only 2 answers but then i'm anywayz bad when it comes to competitions.
btw u din mention what ur mom says 'bout those weird e-mails 'bout ur blog.
Your mum can add another mallu to the list! :) I can't believe you actually let your mum read your blog! In fact, I can't believe any mum can be updated enough to know what a blog is.. :)
Oh, and sorry I'm not doing your questions coz I already read the comments and I would be cheating.. :)
3. Messy Office Desk
Sharanya is totally lost
Jumps as soon it is six
6. Sure thing, Wouldn't you? :)
7. And it's not because I am loney. And it's not because it's New Year's Eve!
Very clever idea, must say! :)
So, when do results happen?
[Vinu] Ah, so the new friendly me image is already working?! WOW! :)
Well goodie that you think the analysis made any sense at all! And about the interpretation about the story and this title, no sweat. You interpret it exactly the way you want to. There are no absolute truths anyway!
[Closet] Really? What Hogwash? Sounds something like HP! :)
And congrats on completing contest, wait for results! :)
[Mustang] Clever thing about that link! No, that doesn't mean you have an edge here!
Ya, "Shop around the corner'... my aspired for state! :)
[Mandar] It is true! But, that doesn’t mean I have nothing to say, NO SIR! :)
[Jasmine] I could regale you with some horrific tales about my mom and my Blog. My mum is very updated when it comes to technology, so that helps!
But, this Blog thing she has got hooked on to recently and causes me much embarrassment... Like when you are a kid and guests come home, mom will call you sand say, “Beta, aunty ko Twinkle Twinkle karke batao’… much the same with my Blog. She will tell random people, “Do you know Buggie Blogs?”. When they gape at word Blog, she will pooh paah and get into detailed explanation! :)
Ah, another Mallue! Goodie! :)
[Sharanya] Excellent! Though, you attempted only 3 of them! :) But you shall still be in contention. Results will happen soon.
Brilliant sense of humor based on a lot of truth. So much truth that I dropped my virtual pen and had to think about how I fit in the blog categories.
Now I'm depressed and thinking I'm not so snarky.
Take Care
Michael
Wonderful post!
1)The long n winding road u must take b4 'nasty commenters' leave your blog???
2)5
5) Pride n Prejudice :)
7)"I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.” -- thats my fave :)
Now that i have humoured you, let me get back to to your analysis and check where i fit in :)
Priceless! :)
Thoough, I ought to bring others attention that Closet is your cousin and shouldn't that be a disqualification?
1) Long and winding Road before you become an aesthetically non-challenged Blog?
3) Computer, Keyboard and Mouse
Kleptomaniac looking lost
Stole a moment and commented
6) Nope, I wouldn't. Most things don't last forever, certainly not make-believe! Besides, Janeane Garafalo was cool as is! :)
7)I love that you get cold when it's 71 degrees out... yup, that certainly did it for me
So, do I make it to shortlist?
You win
Longest post I ever actually read all of.
???
[Michael] Hey, thanks! Oh, oh, now! getting people depressed wasn't the intent. I was merely doing some self-referential thinking aloud!
[Kumari] Ah, good answer! :) Will anounce shortlist soon!
[Kleptomanis] I am shocked! You are accusing me of rigging contest? Really, so what if Closet is Cousin, what's the harm to keep trophy within the family! :)
Good answers BTW and cool Haiku!
[Perdita] Thank you! Thank you!
[Funkysmell] Ditto!
read mine sumtime n tel me which ategory it falls into...
A really good piece of writing. I've already commented about your blogging which you replied that to be a result of gene pool. Your narrative is what I like. Keeps one engrossed. Your questions! Way above me. If I could make up a good haiku, I'd post that in my blog! :-)) Do keep blogging.
got here late. what's the prize? :P
good analysis ......
u have really good blog out here ...[ trying to be as "mac'ish" as possible ;) ]
u left another type.....like mine....where the comments are always in tanglish(tamil+english) which makes some bloggers go crazy....
hmm. a really long and winding road of thoughts.
1.Read Your eMail.
2.Five.
3. Above Blue Waves Lash
Thinking of Paddy Rising
Time to take the jump
4. Swati already answered this above.
5. The same author of “Sense and Sensibility” from "First Impressions" later known as "Pr & Pr".
6.Actually both in a single package is welcome but if you insist on choosing only one there is a slight edge to Noelle. She is smart about love (which Abby is found to be lacking a la Arvind Swamy in "Sapnay")
7.
> Part I liked the most
“I love that you get cold when it's 71 degrees out."
>Thought was the clincher?
"And it's not because I'm lonely, and it's not because it's New Year's Eve."
lol! cool blog.
:D
[Dor] Oh, meaning my categorical classification parameters didn't help? Chah!
[Jinguchakka] Hehe, thank you! The gene pool reference was to keep the various members of my family who read my Blog a happy lot! :) I would have loved to see your id in a Haiku! :)
[Kafka] Would that mean that you don't trust me that there will be a prize?
[Me]Well to fellow Mac'Blogger. May our tribe grow and our language spread far and wide! :)
[Wanderer] Ya, thoughts sounds really polite! :)
[Paddy] Ah nice Haiku!
Ah, ha so it is Noelle!Love and practical, errm?! :)
[Teleute] Thanks much! :)
Oh and Mr Bird Brained,
Most painful sport this is being.
You comment-I delete.
You comment again-I delete again.
You comment once more - I delete once more.
You comment yet again - I delete yet again.
But "Deleting Your Comment" is the operative phrase here.
The painful bit is that we are in different time-zones. Also, I don't check my Blog as frequently as you seem to be checking mine! I have a life you see! :D
But two can most certainly play this game. I am lapping up all the attention.
Much thanks!
less of Govt Babu n more of Mac now? lol!
Should one read into the fact that there seems to be an underlying sarcasm?
[Teleute] Part of my new friendly self! :)
[Gautam] Underlying? :)
Well - I am a sucker for all contests and Market research surveys / activities :) so here is my active participation
1)Five (5) is the number of paragraphs that begin with “Now” in this post.
2)The opening lines of, ‘Gone with the Wind’- Scarlett ‘O “ Hara was not beautiful, but men seldom realized it and were caught by her charm. ?? Is that it ?
3) Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen the original source of, ‘It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife’
4) Two parts that I have liked the most –
o And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night
o I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”
Vanita
just curious ... what's been the outcome
Lol... you're a funny one...
Me, I'm defy The Shop Around the Corner. But I'm not afraid of the Big Wolf Blogs!
[Vanita] Brilliant! :) And bablinbombay??? Much hepness! :)
[Bonatellis] Outcome of? My contest? I haven't thought about it, but let me not admit to such things now! :)
[Prashanth] Funny is not such a bad thing I suppose! :) Am good my analysis made some sense to you now! Shop around the corner, eh? Very cool, someday I shall be that too...
I see ive arrived a bit late to say anything of importance. But that was a nice post primal soup.
Damn! I love your blog! Hey, how come I never get any emails from anyone? Bad deo I'm using maybe?
The connection: I deserve a prize for this one!
Long winding road -> Everyday is a winding road -> Sheryl Crow -> Tomorrow never dies -> James Bond ->007 -> There are seven questions on the blog. Q.E.D. And you are making subtle references to the seven deadly sins :D
My Haiku:
opening lines on
jax, lies and videotape
"do you masticate?" :D
[Rat] Thank you! Thank you! Like they say better late than... :)
[Jax] Brilliant! I am overwhelmed by your genius! Good Haiku too! :)
